SOMALIA: Sub-clan clashes with police in Puntland

The central police station in Bosaaso, in the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, northeastern Somalia, was attacked on Saturday night.

Sources in Bosaaso told IRIN that the attackers were members of the Puntland security forces, who were enraged by the arrest of a sub-clan member by the police.

The police repulsed the attack, forcing the attackers to retreat without freeing the detained man.

The man being held, whose name was given as Huruse, is a member of the Umar Mahmud, the sub-clan to which the Puntland leader, Abdullahi Yusuf, belongs, the source said.

The matter now appears to have subsided as no more attacks have taken place.

"Some gunfire could be heard last night, but I don't know if it was related to Saturday's incident," said the source, adding: "It is all quiet now."
