The Somaliland minister of interior and information and the state minister for
foreign affairs this evening held a press conference at the office of the minister
of information and disclosed that citizens of Somaliland will now travel abroad
using the Somaliland passport with effect from 19th September. The
ministers, Ahmad Shambir Sultan and Ali Muhammad Waran-Adeh, explained that the
Somaliland cabinet had approved the decision. From tomorrow, citizens of Somaliland
can apply for and travel with the new Somaliland national passport -a clear proof
that Somalilanders have nothing to do with Somalia.
The ministers further said some countries had already recognized the Somaliland
passport and in this regard a Somaliland delegation led by President Muhammad
Ibrahim Egal, would on Wednesday, 20th September, travel to Ethiopia, using the
new Somaliland passport. In their concluding statement, the ministers gave guidelines
on how, when, and where the citizens could obtain the new passport.
